Lecithin is regarded in the scientific community as a synonym for phosphatidyl choline (PC), which is said to be the main compound responsible for all the benefits of lecithin, specifically its medicinal effects.87 Lecithin comes from the Greek word lekithos, meaning "egg yolk," which, with soybeans, is one of its richest sources.86

Lecithin is a fat-like substance called a phospholipid. The liver produces it daily, if the diet is adequate. Approximately 30% of your brain is composed of lecithin. It is also found in your SPINE and NERVES as well as ALL the MUSCLES in your body.90 Of the insulating and PROTECTIVE SHEATHS that surround your brain, spine and THOUSANDS of MILES of NERVES, lecithin accounts for TWO-THIRDS of their composition. Your heart (the hardest muscle to fatigue) has the highest lecithin content.89

It is NEEDED by EVERY CELL in the body and is a key BUILDING BLOCK of CELL MEMBRANES. Without it, they would HARDEN. Lecithin protects cells from oxidation.92

Lecithin is the richest source of choline, which the brain converts to acetylcholine. Acetylcholine mediates our emotions and behavior and provides an IMPORTANT CHEMICAL BRIDGE between NERVE CELLS.86 It acts as a chemical messenger to parts of the nervous system, and is essential to the brain's memory function.

Dr. Safford, who conducted studies that showed lecithin and choline supplements seem to actually boost memory, also noted that the health benefits of lecithin are seen almost immediately. "The fascinating thing about lecithin is that when it helps, it's right away. It's one of the few substances that crosses the blood-brain barrier and produces an IMMEDIATE reaction."93

Phosphatidylcholine and glyceryl-phosphorylcholine may help build nerve cell membranes, facilitate electrical transmission in the brain, hold membrane proteins in place and produce the neurotransmitter.88

Lecithin is responsible for maintaining the surface tension of the cell membrane and it does so by controlling what goes in and out of each cell. Without enough lecithin, the cell wall HARDENS, and does not allow enough nutrients in or wastes out. This leads to premature aging of cells. The surface tension of the cell maintained by lecithin is also responsible for transmitting nerve impulses and messages through or from the cell.89

Lecithin has been touted for years as a WONDER FOOD capable of combating atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis, anxiety, tremors and brain aging.91

It displays potential as a remedy for various psychological and neurological diseases such as Tourette's syndrome, Alzheimer's disease and bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression). This claim is based on the significant role that lecithin plays in NERVE CELL SIGNALING as well as in synthesizing important neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, without which many of our cognitive functions could be impaired.87

Lecithin is safe except for people who are highly ALLERGIC to SOY.91

SUMMARY: Lecithin will help heal and balance the frayed nerves that are present as a result of prolonged inflammation.
